Kerry Washington Reveals Her Summer Beauty

The world knows Kerry Washington best for her role as D.C.-based crisis manager Olivia Pope on Scandal, but soon they’ll see her portray yet another whip-smart woman in politics: Anita Hill. For HBO’s TV movie, Confirmation, Washington won’t be wearing neutral pieces from designers like Armani, Valentino, and Gucci (all of which we’ve seen on rotation in Pope’s wardrobe), but will be donning a much bolder hue—one beloved by women of the ’90s. “It was actually really haunting the first time I walked into my trailer and saw that famous turquoise suit hanging there and had the hair done and that plum, berry lip color,” said Washington of the notorious ensemble Hill wore during the Supreme Court confirmation hearing for Clarence Thomas (during which the issue of sexual harassment in the workplace was brought to national attention). “It really was kind of shocking to see all of that re-created on me.”
Costume changes aside, another startling statistic the actor cited during our conversation: “One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lives.” As a creative consultant for Neutrogena, Washington plays an integral role in the brand’s Choose Skin Health campaign—drumming home the message that skin cancer isn’t colorblind and affects people of every shade and racial background. “People of color are so vulnerable when we don’t use SPF because sun damage leads to skin cancer. It’s really important that we protect ourselves, and that we have the information and do annual skin screenings, because skin cancer is one of the most preventable cancers,” she said. “There’s just no excuse for people to suffer the way they used to.” Here, Washington reveals her summer beauty rules and her best ’90s fashion moments.
